The Monolith. 2003. Beowulf cluster of 48 computers, 300cm high. The Monolith listens to, interprets and speaks the internet. The scripts download random audio streams from the internet, and - regardless of the source - use an English speech recognition engine to transcribe them into an English text. At the same time the cluster constructs a constantly changing voice. The audio streams themselves are cut up into individual phonetic sounds and filed away. The Monolith then speaks it's English text by pasting together the relevant phonetic sound files. As soon as a phonetic file is used it is erased. The whole process is continuous and endless.
